In this lesson, you will Explore what values are and how they show up in our day-to-day lives.
What’s a Value?
Understanding our core values is a first step towards connecting more deeply with our authentic selves.
Values are the hidden compass within us, guiding our decisions, actions, and purpose in life. Through introspection and self-discovery, we uncover the essence of who we are and why we do what we do. It's a unique opportunity to recognize that not all values carry the same weight in our lives.
During this module, you'll gain clarity about the ideas that truly resonate with you, possibly distilling them down to just two or three core values. The more you delve into this exploration, the more insight and empowerment you'll gain to steer your life in the direction that aligns with your true self. It's a process that can help you make meaningful choices about your career, relationships, and overall life purpose.
Hidden Values in Action: two leaders
Blind Pursuit
I once had the privilege of working closely with an incredibly talented engineer and leader. Their technical prowess was matched only by their ability to rally teams and create immense value for the company. Their top values were achievement, financial success, hard work, and education.
Their persuasive skills were legendary, and they could forge connections that propelled projects to success. However, their relentless pursuit of excellence took a toll. They placed immense pressure on themselves, often working long hours to meet their own high standards. They delivered on every promise, no matter the cost. As a result, they found themselves exhausted, overwhelmed, and disconnected from their loved ones.
Tragically, this relentless drive led to two divorces and strained relationships with their children. The toll on their health was severe, forcing them to take a year off to heal.
I watched their career soar as they led multiple companies to success. Their personal life remained turbulent. I wondered when they would find balance.
UNConscious Connection
I had the privilege of working alongside an individual whose journey from humble East Coast beginnings to remarkable leadership was inspiring. Their top values: family, active listening, curiosity, and embracing the bigger picture.
They earned an architecture degree from a prestigious university, broadened into urban planning, and pursued law. Their path led them from a small software company to General Counsel at a rapidly growing firm.
Over eight years, their dedication never wavered. They endured long commutes and worked tirelessly, driven to serve. They transitioned to Chief Administrative Officer and eventually CFO.
What made them truly exceptional was their boundless curiosity and the genuine connections they fostered. Even in the most stressful moments, they infused a sense of play and joy, spreading contagious laughter that echoed through the halls. Yet, their defining quality was their deep love and commitment to the people they worked with. Their leadership wasn't solely about achieving success but also centered on nurturing and empowering those around them.
Awakening to Our Values
These two stories both show the profound impact of unconscious values. They underscore the importance of understanding our values and their influence on our lives. Values are like hidden currents that carry us to a destination, whether we consciously choose that destination or not. They can lead us to places of fulfillment or despair. Luckily, we can learn to navigate these currents consciously.
The opportunity to reflect on our values and make intentional choices is an investment in ourselves and the life we aspire to lead. It's a journey of self-discovery that allows us to align our actions with our deepest convictions. By doing so, we can aspire to both success and fulfillment, finding harmony between our personal values and professional ambitions.
In essence, uncovering our values and choosing wisely is not just a self-improvement exercise; it's a roadmap to a life where success and fulfillment coexist. It's a journey worth embarking upon because, in the end, our values define the destination, and with conscious navigation, we can ensure it's a place where we truly want to be.
